Worcester is located in Central Massachusetts, about an hour West of Boston. A 2006 estimate puts the population at 176,000 people.
The city encompasses a total area of 38.6 square miles (99.9 km²) including 1,200 acres of publicly owned land. All of this water together takes up more than 2% of the of town.
Worcester has a diversified economy with strong ties to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and health care services. The largest employer is the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The nearby Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park is home to more than a dozen innovative biotechnology companies, including a lab facility forAdvanced Cell Technology and the Abbott Bioresearch Center, a subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories, a leading pharmaceutical research and manufacturing firm.
